Introduction

From 29 April to 7 (later: 15) June, an electronic conference took place on School Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SSHE). The conference was organized by UNICEF and IRC. IRC was also the facilitator and manages the related website. WEDC took care of the technical moderation. The purpose of the conference was to create a global debate on achieving two major development goals: (1) create the large-scale conditions that will enable every child in the world to learn in a healthy and safe school environment and (2) ensure that every child masters and spreads good sanitation and hygiene practices in their school, home and community. A background paper and resource documents were posted on the SSHE website. Participants who could not download papers could request for hard copies by mail. The conference had 347 participants, of whom 66 (34 women, 25 men, 1 organization and six persons of undisclosed sex) contributed actively. They sent in 99 messages, which often covered more than one issue or theme. Because some participants contributed more than once, there were 53 contributors in all, 26 women, 20 men, 1 organization and six persons of undisclosed sex
