India: Karnataka Urban Water Sector Improvement Project

Updated - Tuesday 04 May 2004

With the approval of a US$ 39.5 million (EUR 33.1 million) loan to the Indian southern state of Karnataka, the World Bank will enhance the efficiency, management, and delivery of water supply and sanitation to the state’s urban residents. The Karnataka Urban Water Sector Improvement Project supports the Government of Karnataka in launching its urban water sector reform process, and in demonstrating that continuous, efficient and sustainable water service provision can be achieved. The project will benefit about 200 thousand residents in the cities of Gulbarga, Belgaum and Hubli-Dharward. The project will serve as a stepping-stone to further encourage reform at the state level.

The project has two main components:

  • technical assistance to support the Government of Karnataka’s sector reform agenda, and to prepare follow-on investment projects; and
  • physical investments in the three urban local bodies to improve bulk water supplies and demonstrate the feasibility of continuous and safe water supply in pilot areas.
