Community Management
Community management is the functional control of systems by communities or their representatives. It can and often does, but does not have to, include elements of community ownership, and involvement in day to day operation and maintenance. It is particularly reliant on clarity of ownership of schemes.
Financing & Cost Recovery
IRC has identified financing and cost recovery as one of its main focus areas for the coming years in order to address these and many other outstanding questions and gaps in knowledge about the financing of equitable water service provision for rural and low income urban areas.
Gender
IRC promotes a gender approach to water and sanitation projects and programmes through its information resources, advocacy work, publications, and projects with partners. Through active participation in international efforts IRC staff and partners also help to raise awareness of gender issues in the sector
Hygiene Promotion & Sanitation
The promotion of better hygiene, alone, or in combination with better water supply and/or sanitation, can have a major impact on reducing disease prevalence and public and private health costs.
Information & Communication
Changes are needed in attitudes and behaviour, both among those who make decisions about priorities in expanding coverage, and among people in the communities. This calls for the creation of a communication culture, where information sharing, dialogue and participation become second nature.
Learning Alliances
The Learning Alliances methodology allows implementation of successful innovations on a large scale. Practitioners and researchers involved and interested in Learning Alliances are invited to share practical experiences and to further develop the concept. This folder contains IRC publications related to Learning Alliances.
Operation & Maintenance
Too many water supply and sanitation systems function very poorly and often the systems are not in operation. One of the key problems is the fact that operation and maintenance has been neglected since the commissioning of the system.
Productive uses of water
Access to water of sufficient quality and quantity plays a critical role in the livelihoods of poor men and women, where water is a key input in a range of both domestic and (small-scale) productive uses at the household level.
