Monitoring is included in BlueZone ABC maintenance

FairWater Paul van Beers, comment on Monitoring Sustainable WASH Service Delivery Symposium

Monitoring indeed is a key element in the water sector. Governments need to know on a regular basis what goes on with the precious public water supply sources in their country.

Public Water Supply however from a monitoring viewpoint is different from "house-hold" wells and small family wells in gardens etc. Obvious, the "self-supply" sector is on it's own and cannot be monitored effectively.

This is different for modern Public Water Supply (PWS) by hand-pumps. This technology still represents over 80% of the rural PWS in Africa.

With the recent introduction of sustainable hand-pump technology of BluePumps and BlueZone "ABC" management, the "Annual BluePump Check-up" is not only providing safe & affordable water for communities, it also offers excellent and low-cost monitoring of PWS for the Government.

In a BlueZone, there is no need to go around and make pictures of broken pumps! In the first place, because it is very unlikely a BluePump breaks down, and secondly, the Service Provider has the record of what goes on in "his" BlueZone and shares that info with the Government.

The good news is that more and more, NGOs are accepting and getting used to the logic fact that a quality hand pump such as the BluePump is more expensive in the beginning, but will thousand fold payback it's investment in consumers satisfaction and low-cost reliable water supply.

Governments are also wakening up and acknowledge the great monitoring advantage of the BlueZone concept for them. Also BlueZones bring political advantages and stability in a rural area. When people have reliable low-cost water, they are happy and prosper.

BluePumps and BlueZones create win - win situations for many stakeholders; NGOs, Governments, communities and local private service providers who have a secure job to supervise & maintain their BluePumps in their BlueZone.

It seems that finally something good & blue is happening in Africa!
