Burkina Faso creates new ministry for water and sanitation

Sector stakeholders were delighted when the new government of Burkina Faso announced the creation of the Ministère de l’Eau, des Aménagements Hydrauliques et de l’Assainissement (Ministry of Water, Hydraulic Planning and Sanitation) in January 2013. Mrs. Mamounata Belem/Ouédraogo, who heads the new ministry, has a challenging job ahead.

IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre opens its second office in Africa

Ouagadougou / The Hague, 17 September 2012: After twenty years of working in Burkina Faso through various local and international partner agencies – among which Eau-Vive, WaterAid, Water and Sanitation for Africa WSA/EEA – the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre is officially opening its national representation in Ouagadougou today. The Burkina Faso office is the second national representation of IRC in Africa, following the opening of a country office in Ghana earlier this year. The opening of national offices is part of the IRC’s on-going decentralisation process.

Fourth discussion on water: promoting household sanitation in rural areas; a concern shared by journalists

On Friday 29 June 2012, WASH sector professionals and journalists gathered at Sidwaya (Hebdo newspaper from Ouagadougou) for the Fourth Round of discussions on water –Palabres d’eau. With Abu-bakr Adiz,Director General of Editions Sidwaya, serving as the activity’s Chairperson, attendees discussed the role journalists can play in promoting domestic sanitation in rural areas.

Working Paper 4 - De l’accès aux systèmes de distribution d’eau potable

Working Paper 4 proposes an alternative methodology and different tools for learning about how populations access water services. The methodology looks at the national level and is based on the application of monitoring indicators in accordance with regulation standards that are enforced in Burkina Faso.

Applying the life-cycle costs approach: Latrine costs in Burkina Faso

The costs presented in this document are the minimum costs of access to sanitation. They are inevitably less than the life-cycle costs of a sustainable sanitation service. Moreover, the unit cost calculated on the basis of household expenditures can by no means be considered as an estimate of the ideal standard cost of a latrine.
