En muchos países existe una alta prevalencia de enfermedades relacionadas con el agua y el saneamiento, que causan en la población y particularmente en los niños, mucho dolor e inclusive la muerte. Los comportamientos higiénicos mejorados son esenciales para cortar las rutas de transmisión de estas enfermedades. Mientras que una apropiada educación en higiene puede incentivar la intención de cambiar ciertos comportamientos higiénicos, para la mayoría de ellos se hacen necesarias las instalaciones de agua y saneamiento, de tal manera que la gente pueda transformar la intención en un cambio real.
