Uganda Country Programme (UCP)

Since 2002 IRC has become increasingly active in Uganda. Work in the country represents an annual investment of around one million euros. A programmatic collaboration - the Joint WASH Programme (JWP) - was established between IRC and SNV in 2012, meaning that IRC is now involved in joint activities of about two million euros per year. This collaboration has made IRC’s work visible in eight districts.

IRC focusses on initiatives that strengthen learning processes, in particular at decentralised levels. IRC improves the capacity of local stakeholders, in government and civil society, to address problems with local solutions building on the strengths of local stakeholders, including the users of services. A second focus is on strengthening governance and accountability. IRC improves monitoring and accountability methodologies and tools, that contribute to service responsiveness to demand and performance. Action research involves stakeholders at all levels to inform national level policy development and implementation.

IRC Uganda is in the process of registering itself as a national NGO. Currently (2012) Mr. René van Lieshout is IRC's country and East Africa programme manager, based in Kampala and supported through regular visits by Uganda Country Programme (UCP) and East Africa Regional Programme (EARP) IRC team members.
