This article provides insight into how the Swedish Environmental Institute (SEI) used the life-cycle costs approach while collecting household sanitation and hygiene data to support their study on productive and conventional on-site sanitation in Rwanda. Vera van der Grift (IRC) interviewed Nelson Ekane (SEI) to learn about their use of life-cycle costing and their future plans for the approach.

WASHCost Mozambique is saying farewell to their partners in the country, but leaving behind a treasure chest of resources. In a document highlighting ten key findings from the project, Andre Uandela says: “The project has come to a close, but the ideas and approaches have been introduced into the sector and are being further embedded by training professionals working in the sector. The aim is sustainable services in every district in the country. Please use this data as a motivator and a baseline for the future and continue to collect and analyse data that will help the WASH sector to transform the lives of people.”

“The real costs of sustainable services” campaign was launched in October 2012. The first theme focused on “costing sustainable sanitation services”. This December and January, water services will be in the spotlight. We will share with you key findings and messages from WASHCost’s research on water services in Burkina Faso, Ghana, India, and Mozambique.

WASHCost in the Sanitation Hackathon

On December 1-2 2012, civic technologists will convene with subject matter experts at various sites around the world to participate in the Sanitation Hackathon. Participants will address problems facing the sanitation sector. WASHCost is challenging participants in the London site location of the event to develop a quick and easy way for practitioners to check probability of sustainable sanitation by comparing life-cycle costs with desired service levels.

A partir desta perspectiva, este documento analisa os instrumentos e mecanismos de planificação e orçamentação existentes no país a todos os níveis e mostra como estes estão interligados. WASHCost Ghana End-of-Project Meeting in Accra

The WASHCost Project Ghana is holding its End-of-Project meeting in Accra, Ghana. The meeting is under the theme: Costing Sustainable Rural Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Services, and scheduled for the 29th and 30th November, 2012. This event is the penultimate prior to the end of the four-year project.
The two-day event will be used to showcase the main activities and achievements of WASHCost Project in Ghana over the four-year period (2008 – 2012). It will also help in the facilitation of the embedding and up-take of the WASHCost legacy costing concept - the life-cycle costs approach (LCCA)- by way of mainstreaming the process and its uptake at all levels will be deliberated.
The second day of the event will be used to organise an Life Cycle Cost Approach (LCCA) training for participants.
Taking life-cycle costs approach to field-level - Millennium Water Alliance applies concepts through partners in Africa and Latin America

Millennium Water Alliance (MWA) is a champion of the life-cycle costs approach. They, along with partners, are applying the approach in Ethiopia, Kenya, and parts of Latin America to improve monitoring and evaluation of their WASH programmes. IRC’s WASHCost discussed with Susan Dundon of MWA and learned how the organisation is gathering evidence to show how the life-cycle costs approach works or doesn’t work in reality.
