In an interview with Pan European Networks, IRC Senior Sanitation Specialist Joep Verhagen explains how sanitation efforts need to begin to increase their focus on sustainability.
EU aid for water and sanitation hit a record €1.6bn in 2009, but in March 2012 the EU announced plans to redirect development to ‘the world’s neediest nations’ with fears that this could harm sanitation efforts in Latin America, Asia and possibly some sub-Saharan African countries. Joep Verhagen shares his thoughts on the EU plans and on how knowledge-sharing partnerships and research are helping to provide sustainable solutions to existing rural and urban sanitation problems.

Burkina media reports on opening of new IRC office in Ouagadougou

News site LeFaso.Net reports on the opening of IRC's national office in Burkina Faso on 17 September 2002. The article quotes Sabné Koanda, technical advisor for the Ministry of Agriculture and Water and IRC Director Nico Terra. IRC case study on commercial faecal sludge recycling features in the New Agriculturist

The July 2012 issue of the New Agriculturist features a story about the "honey-suckers" of Bengaluru, which is based on a case study published by IRC. In Bengaluru in southern India, tanker drivers known as honey-suckers provide a valuable sanitation service, collecting faecal sludge from households not served by the sewerage network.

The Hindu mentions IRC work in Kerala

A team from the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC) visited the Mundathicode panchayat recently to study initiatives in the water and sanitation sectors and decentralisation, reported The Hindu newspaper from Kerala on 10 May 2012. The team, headed by Nico Terra, IRC director, interacted with local body representatives and beneficiaries of various schemes. The team also met P.P. Balan, director of the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA).
