Interview with Dick de Jong

Martin G. Beyer, comment on “Water and sanitation improvement good for economic development”

A very interesting interview, well conducted by Peter McIntyre. Not only did Dick contribute very essentially to the UNICEF-assisted handpump programme in Bangladesh, but later on during his many years with IRC, was a strong factor in helping IRC find the right way in its role as powerhouse for information, training and programme support around the world. Am happy to note from the Internet the many close connections betwseen IRC and good old UNICEF. Also this interview I hope might develop into being part of a history of IRC, which would be in line with, among others, the plans presently under preliminary discussion for a history of WSSCC. Personally I retain many fond memories from our mutual interaction way back in the 1970s and 1980s, not to forget the niewe haring and the Oude or the Jonge Genever at the post-meeting conviviality. And mainly the many friends at all levels and parts of IRC, lively, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. -- PS: Dick, many thanks for your kind mention of the newsletter, From the UNICEF Waterfront. It was a lot of fun to write it, and to have the response from the worldwide readership, during the eleven years it lasted. Last but not least, my warmest wishes for the continuation of whatever you will be doing, happy to see that you will not leave the scene. Een gelukkig Niew Jaar!
