Helvetas focuses on the rural population in Africa, Asia and Latin America and work within three central areas: Improvement of the rural infrastructure (e.g. rural water supply, settlement hygiene), Promotion of the sustainable exploitation of natural resources (e.g. ecologically sound agriculture, coastal fisheries, promotion of peasant organizations) and Promotion of education and culture (e.g. education, professional training).
