Learning about Resource Centre Networks

Updated - Tuesday 05 June 2012

The first PSO-funded programme (2008-2010) focused on capacity development of the RCN coordinators and the organisations hosting the RCN secretariat. It also helped RCNs to produce useful information products and services to assert their visibility and credibility. With financial support from PSO IRC has organised several learning and sharing events, a training for the Resource Centre Network (RCN) coordinators in 2009 and supported the facilitators and other network members to participate in relevant international events and workshops.

Links with other resource centres were sought as well, for example in a workshop jointly organised and facilitated by IRC, WASTE and Stockholm Environmental Institute, where representatives of resource centres shared their experiences, challenges and worked on joint proposals.

For the PSO funded programme called 'Strengthening national capacities for better learning in the WASH sector' (2008- 2010) IRC has provided:

  • skills training at IRC,
  • support in documentation of experiences, and facilitation of learning at sector level (in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Honduras, Nepal and Uganda).
  • facilitation of a platform for continuous learning (Community of Practice),
  • organisation of presentation of experiences at international platforms,
  • (co) organisation of regional events for sharing and learning on sector learning.

Improving knowledge management and sector performance

IRC, Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI) and WASTE all have experiences supporting WASH resource centres for improved WASH sector performance. These resource centres go by different names - knowledge nodes, local knowlegde centres, Resource Centres - and have different focus areas, but they also have a lot of issues in common.

To benefit from this experience and look for opportunities for collaboration, IRC, SEI and WASTE organised a workshop on 11 and 12 September 2011, which focused on:
- Learning and sharing on experiences of resource centres/ knowledge centres
- Sustainability, working on EU Water Fund proposal and other opportunities for funding further work
