Lucy Lytton, comment on Aceh salinated wells

This is not a universal solution! It is important to understand the geological environment in which the wells are situated. Salt water is heavier than fresh water and naturally sinks to the bottom of the aquifer. When it rains, the freshwater naturally rests on top of the salt water. If salt water is then pumped out of a well and discharged on the ground, this may effectively just be recycling salt water back into the groundwater and destroying the natural ability of the groundwater system to regenerate. This would make the situation worse!
