CONIWAS benefits from Southern Youth Zone programme

The Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) in Ghana is benefitting from the second phase of the Southern Youth Zone programme (SYZP) organized by IRC. The programme officer, Ms. Basilia Nanbigne, has been selected to represent Ghana in this programme, their training started in September 2011.

The community of La Sirena outside Cali, Colombia, has been practicing good conservation of water for over 20 years. The community was trained by Cinara, a local institution specializing in water and sanitation projects. Sustainability of La Sirena’s water system is a success, while other communities have wasted their water.

Closing the learning loop to feed national decision making

Any learning process must be effective. In Ghana, the learning process in the water and sanitation sector is extensive and devolved, as it should be. But there is an important gap. A structured mechanism is needed to channel lessons from the communities, learning alliances, and other learning fora to decision makers, for example, the annual inter-ministerial roundtable at the Ghana Water Forum.
Community-managed sewage treatment systems in rural Gujarat do a good job

Community-managed sewage treatment systems do a good job and have as added bonus that they also encourage local people in rural areas to build their own toilets. What is more, local farmers can re-use the treated effluent which brings them money as well as promotes sustainable agriculture, preserves scarce water resources, and maintains environmental quality.
Reflection workshop for Young Professionals of Youth Zone Programme

From 18 July to 27 July, IRC organized a reflection workshop for the recruited Young Professionals who have ended their nine-month work at the receiving partner organisation. They returned to their sending organisation in the last week of July 2011 and they will start bringing into practice what they have learned. This workshop was an essential bridge between their accumulated experience over the past nine months and the crucial return to their home organisation.

Four young Southern partners from Ghana, Honduras, Nepal and Uganda started training for one month at IRC mid September 2010 as part of a new PSO funded Southern Youth Zone Programme from 2010 to 2012.
