Promotion and revival of ecological sanitation in North West Honduras
Ecological sanitation has not been actively promoted in Honduras. Implementation of ecological sanitation projects was limited to the construction of composting latrines at the end of the eighties, beginning of the nineties. However, these were either not used, or badly maintained. Which lead to the rejection of the technology. Progress and positive results in different parts of the world, triggered the interest of various institutions in Honduras again to promote the technology and revive it as a feasible option in reaching sustainable sanitation.
This field note describes the different experiences in Honduras with ecological sanitation. It also tells the story of the SANECO demonstration project and its lessons learned. The project has been implemented with the support of the members of the branch office of RAS-HON in the North West of Honduras: Water for People, the christian organisation for integrated development (OCDIH) and the Honduran water and sanitation utility (SANAA). The field note is in Spanish and can be downloaded below. The note is an information product developed by RAS-HON’s thematic group on sanitation.
