A study on sustainable sanitation and local governance in Honduras

In 2007, a team of consultants from CRECERH was requested to look into strengthening capacities for the local governance of sanitation services in the poorest areas in Honduras. The objective was to come up with a set of recommendations. The consultancy has been financed by the water and sanitation network of Honduras, RAS-HON and carried out with technical support from IRC. This folder contains the final study in Spanish, as well as a summary developed by RAS-HON. The study results have also been published at international fora. The papers developed for these events, as well the PowerPoints are available in a mix of English and Spanish and can also be found in this folder.

Looking for sustainable sanitation in Honduras by strengthening local governance

Honduras is well on track towards meeting the MDGs for sanitation as coverage is expanding rapidly. However, these statistics do not reflect the sustainability or the use of such facilities, as many of these are in poor condition or are not used at all. In addition, there is a large negative impact on water resources due to the discharge of untreated wastewater. One of the main reasons for this situation is the low capacity of municipalities in planning, implementation and monitoring of sanitation services, but above all in ongoing support to sustainability.
