The key learnings from the 31 case studies on hygiene promotion are presented below using the FOAMS model (adapted from Coombes and Devine, 2009).
Focus
Focus practices and focus groups; know your focus groups and prioritise practices and avoid message overload
Opportunity - in the external environment
Opportunities existing in the external environment to practice the behaviour, e.g. soap and water available, gender relations allow the practice. Ensure that there is opportunity to change behaviour
Ability
Ability to practice, e.g. whether an individual possesses the skills, equipment and time.
Motivation to practice
Motivation to practice, e.g. a sense of disgust, to be modern, to be like others, a better life for children
Sustain and Study
Sustain and Study behaviour change; to determine if the behaviour has been sustained to the point of it being habitual
