UN-Water

UN-Water strengthens coordination and coherence among UN entities dealing with issues related to all aspects of freshwater and sanitation. This includes surface and groundwater resources, the interface between freshwater and seawater and water-related disasters. 

UN-Water, an inter-agency mechanism formally established in 2003 by the United Nations High Level Committee on Programmes.

UN-Water is composed of representatives of 28 United Nations organizations. United Nations organizations include those responsible for major funds and programs, specialised agencies, regional commissions, United Nations conventions and other entities within the UN system. Other organizations outside of the United Nations are partners in UN-Water.

UN-Water focuses on:

  • Providing information policy briefs and other communication materials for policy-makers, water managers, decision-makers and the general public.
  • Building the knowledge base on water issues
  • Providing a platform for system-wide discussions on global water management.

UN-Water has task forces on Transboundary Waters, Gender and Water, Indicators, Monitoring and Reporting, Country-level Coordination, and Sanitation.
