South Africa needs smart water solutions that include not only infrastructure provision, but also management for sustainable operation and maintenance and involvement of consumers. This is a new passion of Fred van Zyl, Director Planning and Information, Water Services, Department of Water Affairs who is wearing more than one hat in South Africa. He is also Acting Chief Water Resources and leading the National Water Resources Strategy development. He spoke to IRC’s Dick de Jong at the Cape Town Water Cube on 20 March 2011.
