Cours Régional de Communication et Mobilisation Sociale(Communication & Social Mobilization Training Course), Institut Régional de Santé Publique (IRSP), University of Cotonou, Cotonou, Benin). Offered in July-August annually since 1995, this course is in French and lasts approximately 6 weeks. It is coordinated by Dr. Narcisse de Medeiros, of Montreal University.

This course, supported by UNICEF and WHO, is designed to help participants to plan, systematize, organise, monitor and evaluate communication and social mobilization intervention in health as well as in other projects or programmes. Participants are given the opportunity to formulate strategies that promote behavioural change; identify critical aspects in the follow-up process; develop a methodical and systematic communication and social mobilization plan of action; evaluate the impact of behavioural change in the community; determine the needed resources and the constraints. The course content is organized in different modules: 1) Basic concepts; 2) Social Analysis techniques; 3) Communication and Social Communication; 4) Social Mobilization techniques; 5) Communication/Social Mobilization Plan.

Marketing Communication for International Health and Development, New York University (NYU), New York, USA.

NYU provides this short course (3 & ½ weeks) every year in July. Participants learn to apply the techniques of Integrated Marketing Communication in the strategic planning of development communication programmes. A major feature of this programme is a facilitated workshop in which participants complete an integrated marketing communication plan for a specific behaviour change programme in health or any other development sector.

The total cost of the programme, excluding transportation, housing, meals and incidentals is 2,500.00 US$.

Participatory Rural Communication Appraisal, the SADC Regional Centre of Communication for Development, Harare, Zimbabwe.

The SADC Regional Centre of Communication for Development offers this and a range of tailor-made training courses as well as modular courses. It is also finalizing a one-year post-graduate degree programme for incorporation into universities in the SADC countries on "Communication for Development". This has already been adopted - and adapted - by the Department of Mass Media of the University of Zambia.

Social Mobilization Course, College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus, Manila, The Philippines.

The College of Mass Communication of the University of the Philippines offers short courses focusing on Communication and Social Mobilization as applied to development programmes. The courses cover the basics of communication: from problem analysis to target audience segmentation, messages development, communication channels and products, pretesting of materials, evaluation, building alliances. This course is being given annually since 1991, and the University is actually considering the development of a credit course, eventually leading to a Master's level.

Workshop on Participatory Development: Concept, Tools and Application, October 6-10, 1997, Ottawa Canada.

It is a practical, iterative and hands-on workshop designed for development practitioners, community activists, local leaders and facilitators, NGOs, and policy and program officers who are interested in learning the latest techniques in participatory development, including PLA and PRA. Cost for attending the workshop is $699 CAD or $575 USD. This includes 4 nights accommodation, workshop fees, training and documentation. Participants will also spend two days living in their community of assignment, which will enable them to apply the tools first-hand. The course is offered periodically since 1996.

Short course on Participatory and Rapid Appraisals for the Health Sector. 7-20 September, 1997, Keele University, Keele, UK..

The objective of the course is to familiarize participants with tools and techniques to provide timely and appropriate information as well as facilitate participation of local people in the planning process. Participants at the end of the course will be able to: a range of tools and techniques for appraisals and evaluation with the community people; identify the appropriate tools and techniques to carry out participatory or rapid assessments involving local people; develop a proposal for solving planning problems systematically and with the use of methods that are relevant to the identified question. Participants will be presented with the framework and methods to undertake rapid and participatory appraisals and evaluations and will be given opportunities to practice the techniques presented by facilitators. The fee for the course is (pounds) 1450. This includes tuition fees, bed, breakfast and dinner at the Keele Conference Hotel.

Democratizing Research: Participation, Action, and Research, Cornell University, Dept. of Anthropology, Ithaca, USA.

A fundamental critique of orthodox social science, the course argues for action research as a combined scientific and social reform strategy. The major varieties and core methods of participatory action research are presented.

The course covers the history and development of participatory research. It offers extensive readings in the literature of the field and an opportunity to develop a framework for a research project with feed-back from other members of the course. The course Professor is one of the pioneers in the development and promotion of the concept.
