Important IRC/DGIS policy meetings on donor harmonisation

Updated - Thursday 14 January 2010

IRC is hosting, in coordination with the Dutch Directorate General for International Cooperation (DGIS), two important policy development meetings in The Hague on 14 and 15 January 2010, bringing together major donors and a few countries around donor and national planning harmonisation and financing.

Global Framework for Action on Sanitation and Water

On 14 January 2010 IRC is hosting a one-day meeting of the Interim Core Group (ICG) of the Global Framework for Action on Sanitation and Water (GF4A). A growing coalition of donor organisations, NGOs and Water Ministers are lobbying for world leaders to take action. This in order to agree on establishing a Global Framework for Action on water and sanitation in order to accelerate coverage for the 2.5 billion people without access to safe sanitation and the 900 million without access to clean water. (See the GF4A web site).

Additionally to the core group members a selected group of observers is also invited. Some organisations will participate through video conferencing.

Africa Working Group meeting

Piggy backing with this meeting is the Africa Working Group (AWG) of the EU Water Initiative (EUWI), for which IRC is providing the secretariat. They are organising an extended meeting of its three chairing organisations on 15 January. This meeting will be held at the premises of DGIS. At 07:30 there is a breakfast meeting at IRC with the chairs of the AWG Troika

  • Mr. Bai-Mass Taal, Executive Secretary for AMCOW,
  • Mr. Reginald Tekateka, co-chair to the Troika in representation of the president of AMCOW, from South Africa,
  • Mr. Peter de Vries and Mr. Dick van Ginhoven of DGIS in their capacity as co-chair of the Troika.

The Africa Working Group (AWG) is one of the ‘regional components’ of the EU Water Initiative (EUWI) and is responsible for its activities in Africa. The purpose of this partnership is to make an effective joint (Africa-Europe) contribution to the achievement of water and sanitation related MDGs in Sub-Sahara Africa.
