Water supply, sanitation and hygiene facilities and related education in faith-based schools
This paper gives a short and very clear overview of experiences and lessons learnt in WASH in Schools. In 2002, UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Programme was cooperating with over 50 countries to achieve integrated WASHE (water, sanitation, health, hygiene and environment) programmes in schools, an increase of 43% in six years. Nine years of cooperation between UNICEF and IRC have resulted in a number of lessons on effective education programmes on water supply, sanitation and hygiene, especially in primary schools. These have been summarised in this document. Also the experiences with building and maintaining water supply and sanitation facilities in schools are listed and these include not just technical design choices, but also other factors that are extremely important for the acceptance and sustainability of facilities.
