WASPA: What happened in 2008?
Updated - Monday 10 August 2009
Although many countries have regulations governing wastewater use, these regulations are hardly ever enforced. Knowledge and information is not available in a practical form for planning and implementation and various stakeholders don't work together to develop holistic strategies. WASPA Asia aimed to address these problems in Kurunegala (Sri Lanka) and Rajshahi (Bangladesh) through a Learning Alliance approach and Participatory Planning.
Several activities were implememented in 2008 and are highlighted on the project website. For example: Garbage traps were built in canals in both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, small treatment plants were constructed in 4 service stations in Kurunegala and the project developed cleaner production guidelines. Hygiene and saniation awareness was raised through trainings and dicussion groups in both towns.
