The Direcção Nacional de Àguas (DNA) and IRC have signed a Letter of Intent to enhance cooperation in water sector support on 15 May 2009.
In 2009 cooperation will focus on the development and implementation of strategy and action plan on anti-corruption and a joint lesson learning and sharing session on the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp).

Other areas of strategic and advisory support that have been identified include:

  • planning for decentralisation
  • ensuring the sustainability in the implementation of capital investment programmes
  • the role of the district in water and sanitation services
  • financing decentralisation; and
  • local IWRM

Among the types of support activities mentioned are learning exchanges, capacity building, strategy advice, knowledge management and the development of tools

While also attempting to leverage additional resources, IRC will contribute resources from its Southern Africa Regional Programme (SAfRP) and DNA will contribute funding through its Project for technical and strategic assistance supported by the Royal Netherlands Embassy.

DNA is the lead partner for IRC’s WASHCost project in Mozambique.
