Sanitation for the urban poor: Exploring new pathways

The Joint Monitoring Report estimates that 320 million urban poor have no access to improved sanitation services. However, the actual number of urban poor without adequate access to appropriate sanitation services is estimated to be manifold. Providing sustainable sanitation services to the urban poor at scale entails a shift from simply seeing interventions as capital projects towards a systems approach that considers all elements required to provide sustainable and appropriate sanitation services.
