Pakistan: umbrella programme on water, sanitation and hygiene planned

The Ministry of Environment, with UNICEF support, is developing a proposal for an umbrella programme on water, sanitation and hygiene. At a meeting held at the Ministry on 21 April 2009, which was attended by representatives from national and local government, the following was proposed:

  • the scope of the project should cover new water supply schemes, rehabilitation of existing water supply schemes, sanitation, hygiene promotion water quality monitoring and improvement, rain water harvesting, capacity development and baseline studies/data collection
  • a programme duration of 5 years
  • an annual budget of Rs. 2.5 billion (€ 22.8 million = US$ 31.0 million)

Stakeholder consultations at provincial-level (including AJK - Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and FANA - Federally Administered Northern Areas) on the proposed programme were planned for May 2009.
