Performance assessment: urban water supply and sanitation in Gujarat and Maharashtra, India
Updated - Monday 11 May 2009
CEPT University has received a US$ 9.84 million (€ 7.22 million) grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a Performance Assessment System (PAS) for urban water and sanitation services. The 5-year research project will focus on the use of performance indicators and benchmarks to facilitate consistent reporting, monitoring, planning, budgeting, and investing in water and sanitation services in 400 urban areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra states in India.
Information on water and sanitation services available in each urban area will be hosted on a dedicated web portal. Lessons from the project will be disseminated to other states and at the national level. The project will help selected Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to develop performance improvement plans to improve access for the poor and achieve financial viability.
CEPT University is implementing the project with the Urban Management Centre (UMC) and the All India Institute of Local Self Governments (AIILSG). CEPT will coordinate the project, with UMC carrying out activities in Gujarat and AIILSG in Maharashtra.
