Sanitation master class

On Tuesday 18 November 2008, BPD Water and Sanitation and IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre held a one-day master class for mid- and high-level practitioners seeking to unravel the complexity of urban sanitation and effective partnerships, providing a robust set of tools with which to plan and negotiate partnerships on the ground.



The experience of sanitation entrepreneurs

This power point presentation takes a closer look at sanitation entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs providing services to the sector can be divided along the following categories:

  • Manufacturers, constructers and marketers e.g. soap, sanitation components, facilities
  • Management of public toilets (usually in urban or peri-urban areas)
  • Sludge removal and transportation business (vacuum trucks and hand emptiers)
  • Management of treatment works or sludge dumping facilities

Sanitation for the urban: partnerships and governance

This power point presentation by Neil McLeod looks at a number of issues concerning sanitation for the urban poor. He discusses among others the key components of sanitation provision, processes and progress. Some of his conclusions are: realisation of the goal of water and sanitation for all is a progressive process, and improving the level of sanitation service to urban poor communities has a positive impact on the whole community.
