Counting how many Ethiopians lack decent water and sanitation

Addis Ababa – 8 April 2013. Providing universal access to water and sanitation, the goal of the Ethiopian Government, is a huge effort that is transforming lives and the economy. The recently completed National WASH Inventory has been a major initiative to better monitor the performance of the water and sanitation sector in the country. Now that a good baseline has been established, the monitoring challenge shifts to making the data available, using data in plans and policy making, and updating. This will the subject of a seminar on Monday 8 April in Addis Ababa on the ‘National WASH Inventory: lessons learned and maximising value’, organised by the Ministry of Water and Energy, IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre and CCRDA-WSF.
Monitoring Sustainable WASH Service Delivery Symposium

Addis Ababa, 9-11 April 2013 - Monitoring is a critical building block for sustaining water and sanitation services. Which water and sanitation system are exactly out there? What is the status of these systems? Knowing is necessary for correcting, adapting, and planning for sustainable WASH service delivery. The Monitoring Sustainable WASH Service Delivery Symposium builds on this and provides a platform for gaining knowledge and discussing the challenges for improved monitoring. The symposium will be attended by some 380 WASH sector experts from all over the world.
IRC signs MoU with India’s premier civil services training and research centre

IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, The Netherlands, and India’s National Institute of Administrative Research (NIAR) are joining forces on capacity development and action research.
On 18 December 2012, the two institutes signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi in the presence of the Secretary of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Mr. Pankaj Jain IAS.
IRC joins Millennium Water Alliance

IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre has joined the Millennium Water Alliance (MWA), the consortium of US-based organisations that implement water, sanitation and hygiene education programmes throughout the developing world. “This is very exciting for us because IRC is so highly respected around the world for its leadership in research and analysis of the growing water and sanitation sector,” said MWA Executive Director Rafael Callejas.
IRC partners with UNC’s Water Institute

IRC and The Water Institute at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill have announced a new collaboration, which will advance both organisations’ goal – to enhance the well-being of people in developing countries through improved water, sanitation and hygiene.
IRC launches WASHCost campaign - focus on water

IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre is launching the online WASHCost campaign. WASHCost will promote the life-cycle costs approach which calculates the long-term costs of lasting Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Services. “The Life-cycle costs approach takes into account all cost elements of building and maintaining WASH infrastructure against the services actually received by users over time”, explains WASHCost Director Catarina Fonseca. ”The campaign's second focus is on water. Every month we will compile the most relevant findings from the country research for an international audience. The campaign will run until March 2013”.
Linking domestic water and food security at Stockholm World Water Week 2012

At the Stockholm World Water Week 2012, IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC), together with partners from the Multiple-Use Services (MUS) Group, will be promoting the use of domestic water supplies to improve food security. Water use at the homestead-level, for small-scale production from livestock, and vegetable gardens make the difference for millions of poor families.
IRC and UNICEF Mozambique to collaborate on One Million Initiative in Mozambique

UNICEF Mozambique Representative Jesper Morch and Nico Terra, Director of IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding defining their collaboration in Mozambique. The objective of the collaboration between UNICEF Mozambique and IRC is to document the experiences and lessons learnt from the Dutch funded “One Million Initiative” which started in 2006.
Linking water and food security on World Water Day 2012 – Food security begins at home

On a day when the UN is highlighting water and food security, the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre is calling for policy changes to promote the use of water at home to boost people’s livelihoods. Homestead-level, small-scale production from livestock and vegetable gardens make a difference for millions of poor families. IRC and partner organisations are pressing for the value of water use for food and income at household level to be accorded greater recognition and reflected in byelaws and local policies, as well as in the implementation of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes.
IRC opens its first office outside The Netherlands in Ghana

On Friday 3rd February 2012, IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre celebrated the official opening of its office in Accra, Ghana. This was an historic event for IRC, as this is the first office IRC has established outside The Netherlands since its foundation in 1968. The office will be led by Mrs Vida Duti, the country director for Ghana.
The outgoing Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing (MWRWH) in Ghana, the Honourable Alban Sumana Bagbin (MP), led the opening ceremony by acknowledging the contribution of IRC towards the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in the country, in terms of both technical and knowledge assistance.
