The government appears serious about tackling the difficulties in the sector. Soon after taking office in 2002, President Uribe participated in a range of meetings throughout the country involving mayors, politicians, professionals and community members. In these meetings, water problems came up as a particular priority, and the new government, though more strapped for resources than the previous administration, has committed itself to address these problems.
