3.3.11 Rolling–up household sanitation and hygiene using the KDS model approach – Uganda

The Department of Environmental Health implemented a three year household sanitation and hygiene project in three districts. These districts are prone to cholera outbreaks as they border L. Albert and the River Nile. The areas are associated with poor sanitation & hygiene and low latrine coverages. The project was based on the Kampala Declaration on Sanitation (KDS 1997), which has a main strategy for implementation focusing on exemplary leadership, on full community mobilization, on schools, on districts and lower levels of LGs and on recognizing the central role of women.

3.3.12 Mpumalanga - South Africa

The project was run by local municipal sanitation working groups, supporting Provincial Local Government Delivery Projects (LGDP). The key players included local village leaders, political representation, officials, emerging contractors and ministry officials of health and water. The Working Groups monitor resources, assess the best technologies to be used, ensure skills development and job creation, and account to the people at village level.
