Workshop on local governance

Updated - Tuesday 10 June 2008

CREPA organised a regional workshop on ‘transparency and local governance for water and sanitation, with support from IRC and on behalf of the Water Integrity Network (WIN). The meeting gathered about 65 participants from almost 15 countries in Francophone West and Central Africa, ranging from various stakeholder groups: mayors and municipal staff, water company directors and staff, NGO representatives from the WASH sector, partners and chapters from Transparency International.

The objectives on the overall governance part of the workshop were to:

  • Inform mayors about local WASH governance and what it entails;
  • Introduce existing tools and approaches to support local WASH governance in the region;
  • Define strategic plans to build upon these approaches and tools;
  • Target successful approaches and define ways to scale them up.

Objectives on the WIN part:

  • Get WASH and transparency specialists to meet and assess the situation of transparency and corruption in the region;
  • Introduce existing tools and approaches to curb corruption and improve transparency;
  • Set up a regional working group (with an action plan) to push and support WIN in the region.

More information on transparency and local governance can be found at the WIN web site.
