Triple-S initiative 2009 - 2014

IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre is leading a six-year multi-country learning initiative to improve water supply to the rural poor. Sustainable Services at Scale (Triple-S) seeks to move away from project-based, stand-alone implementation of water systems towards indefinitely sustainable rural water services delivered at scale. The initiative started in Uganda and Ghana.
W-Africa Regional Symposium

The bi-lingual West Africa Regional Symposium on Sanitation and Hygiene (3-5 Nov 2009, Accra, Ghana) brought together about 140 participants from 17 countries. It was jointly organised by the Resource Centre Network Ghana, UNICEF, West Africa Water Initiative (WAWI), WaterAid, and IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, and supported by the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council.
A wide range of experts and practitioners, coming from 11 different countries in West Africa, presented papers on issues such as Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), ecological sanitation, school sanitation and hygiene promotion. The presentations were used as an appetizer for more in-depth discussion in smaller groups of maximum 12 participants. The symposium provided a platform both for Anglophone and Francophone participants to share good practices and explore new ways forward.
The Tripartite Partnership (TPP) Project - Ghana

IRC supports the Tripartite Partnership (TPP) Project, a three-year collaborative approach involving Ghanaian and Dutch partners that aims at developing innovative management models for delivering water, sanitation and hygiene services to the urban poor in Ghana. The main implementing agency is TREND Group.

Input in MSc course of KNUST, Ghana

IRC staff members went to the Kwame Nkruma University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana, to give input into an MSc course by the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and KNUST on Water supply and environmental sanitation, and Water Resources Management.
WASHCost

The WASHCost Project (2008-2012) in which IRC and partners are involved, researches the life-cycle costs of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in rural and peri-urban areas in four countries. The rationale is that WASH governance will improve at all levels, as decision makers and stakeholders analyse the costs of sustainable, equitable and efficient services and put their knowledge to use.
SWITCH

SWITCH was a 5 year research programme (2006-2011) funded by the European Union focused on sustainable Urban Water Management. IRC's contribution focused on supporting stakeholder engagement processes in SWITCH cities and research on social inclusion issues.
UN-Habitat-SCP-BUS

The UN-Habitat Sustainable Cities Programme has a component on Basic Urban Services, i.e. sanitation and water services. IRC is taking the lead on this Basic Urban Services (BUS) for the period 2003-2008. The emphasis will be on demonstration and scaling-up processes in several cities in different countries, the anchoring of strategies, methods and approaches in local institutions for future capacity building, and the documenting, sharing and using of these different experiences and lessons learned.
