Mozambique: US$ 1 billion needed for water supply programme

Updated - Monday 08 September 2003

Mozambique needs over one billion US dollars (EUR 0.9 billion) in order to meet the millenium target of reducing to half the people deprived of clean drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015, says Public Works and Housing Minister Roberto White. He said that the government is working with its partners to raise the necessary funds, which he described as too high for the country's present financial situation, and this is why the government understands the need to involve the private sector. He noted, however, that another important factor is to involve local communitiees in these services.
