Global Sanitation Fund: WSSCC plans launch in March 2008
Updated - Monday 21 January 2008
The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) has made a strategic decision to concentrate its future work in hygiene promotion and sanitation rather than on water supply. As part of this strategy, the WSSCC is setting up a new financing mechanism, the Global Sanitation Fund (GSF). The fund aims to help large numbers of poor people to attain safe and sustainable sanitation services and adopt good hygiene practices. The GSF is a single pooled fund open to contribution from any source including governments, foundations, private sector and individuals. The money is allocated to Executing Agencies in selected countries, which then grant funds to Sub-Grantees who implement the sanitation and hygiene work programmes agreed for each country. The GSF only supports work in countries that have national sanitation policies. It is not open to spontaneous expressions of interest. The official launch of the GSF is expected for March 2008.
