Access to safe water and sanitation Vs urban poverty

Mathew Ondiek, comment on About SSHE and WASH in Schools

Acess to potable water and decent sanitation can indeed improve household incomes.Reduced incidents of waterborne ailments have tranlated into savings both in terms of time and money( which would otherwise be spent on medication and hospitalization) to the residents of Tuwan, a poor neigbourhood in Kitale Town in Kenya. With support from Practical Action, an NGO working in the town, the residents in partnership with the Municipal Council of Kitale put up a water and sanitation complex from which the locals access water and sanitation facilities at an affordable rate. Data obtained from the local District Hospital show that incidents of waterborne diseases have reduced by 35% in the neigbourhood over the last 9 months since the facility became operational.
