IRC facilitates the sharing, promotion and use of knowledge so that governments, professionals and organisations can better support poor men, women and children in developing countries to obtain water and sanitation services they will use and maintain. Using its web site, documentation, publications, IRC advocates change and aims to improve the information and knowledge base of the sector.

The new department was established in October 2000 on the St Mary's Campus of the College to promote interdisciplinary research in Epidemiology, population biology, evolution and control of infectious diseases, including helminth infections and HIV.
