Rutger Verker from IRC Delft, showed the main results of a research done on the Hygiene Promotion (HP) strategy used during the earthquake in Pakistan.

6. Public Health engineering in detention places

The living conditions in some detention places in developing countries are extremely dangerous for the well-being of the people there.

Evaristo Oliveira discussed the importance of assistance to this group of people, and he stressed the fact that there are international agreements and guidelines which ensure dignity when living under these kinds of circumstances.

5. 2006 Humanitarian toilet challenges

The use of latrines/toilets has been considered as key element toward the improvement of sanitation conditions. Andy Bastable from Oxfam showed different options and approaches developed in order to facilitate the building and use of toilets under either emergency or extreme conditions.

Hygiene promotion and Sanitation (H&S) are new factors in diarrhoeal disease interventions when facing emergencies.

In order to show the importance of this topic and the main initiatives and strategies used in this field, Marielle Snel from IRC Delft, explained the main concepts related to it.

The link between Water and Sanitation (W&S) and HIV has not been clearly considered. During her presentation Madeleen Wegelin from KIT, stressed this fact and the importance of the recognition of this link.
