Philanthropy: Soros gives US$ 50 million to Millennium Villages project

Billionaire financier and global philanthropist George Soros has dedicated US$ 50 million over 5 years to the Millennium Villages project in Africa. His donation is being matched by other donors to bring in US$ 100 million for the project, which works to reduce extreme poverty through a multi-pronged approach covering areas such as health, education, food productivity and water and sanitation.

The Asian Development Bank expects to double its investments in the water sector in 2006-2010 to well over US$ 2 billion annually, making water a core business area of its operations. Africa: more bilateral water aid for Mali, Niger, and Tanzania

Denmark has chosen Mali and Niger as programme countries for bilateral development aid, which will result in increased for the water sector. Britain will give Tanzania GBP 310 million in budget support for the period 2007-2009 for its poverty reduction programme, including water, health and education projects.
Africa: EU launches Trust Fund for African infrastructure

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have agreed to create a Trust Fund for infrastructure in Africa focusing on cross-border projects for road, rail, energy, water and telecommunications infrastructure. In the start-up phase (2006-2007) the Commission intends to mobilise up to EUR 60 million in grants and the EIB up to EUR 260 million in loans for the fund.
