Zimbabwe: water authority raising funds through bottled water sales

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) is bottling and selling water to fund the purchase of water treatment chemicals and to relieve debt. ZINWA has been widely criticised for its failure to provide adequate water supply and sewerage services.
Asia: ADB launching US$ 100 million water financing facility

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is launching a Water Financing Partnership Facility that aims to raise US$ 100 million for its water financing program by 2008. The facility will accept grants from both public and private sources including bilateral and multilateral donors, companies and foundations.
Islamic financing: water Waqf fund initiative launched by IUCN

A new Waqf Fund Initiative for Water has recently been created by the IUCN West Central Asia & North Africa Regional Office (WESCANA) to finance water conservation activities. Waqf is similar to a common law trust.
Italy: tax on bottled water for development cooperation

Tied aid: Denmark ignores OECD warning on use of aid as export subsidy

Denmark will continue to use so-called tied mixed credits in development aid, despite a warning by OECD that this violates a 2001 agreement to abolish tied aid. In 2005 Denmark launched 14 projects worth EUR 295 million – of which several were large water projects – as tied credits.

China´s announcement that it would double aid to Africa by 2009 has drawn attention to emerging donors such as the BRIC countries and new EU member countries. China has provided a grant for a water project in Nigeria, and Brazil is financihg a sanitation project in Angola.
Africa: Netherlands gives US$ 25 million grant to Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative

The Netherlands has given the African Development Bank a grant of US$ 25 million for its Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI). The initiative supports innovative approaches to services delivery in 11 countries, and expects to extend its operations to all African countries that have defined a national water strategy.
Brazil: IDB approves US$ 800 million lending facility for integrated municipal development

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$ 800 million lending facility to Brazil for the Procidades Program, which supports decentralised integrated municipal development projects. The projects will be part of a municipal development plan, focusing on sectors like water and sanitation, with high social and economic impact, mainly targeting low-income populations.
Latin America: US$ 20 million infrastructure fund supports preparation of project proposals
