Kenya: Solar power, electronics and mobile telephony bring water to villages

Residents of Katitika village in Kitui who had to fetch water from far away now have a nearby water point known as, maji ya kompiuta, or ‘computerised water’. Collaboration between Safaricom, Grundfos, a division of the Danish pump maker Grundfos Group, and the Katitika Self Help Group made this happen.

Ceramic filters: Ugandan schools get CrystalPur kits

Uganda has been selected as the only country in Africa to pilot a project that provides cheap and pure drinking water to schools and clinics in rural areas. CrystalPur ceramic water filters can produce between four and six litres of clean water per hour. They can treat up to 7,000 litres of water (350 jerrycans) before the filter needs to be replaced.

Greywater reuse: household kit developed for Middle East

A kit designed to treat household wastewater for reuse has been developed for rural areas in the Middle East and North Africa by the Regional Water Demand Initiative of IDRC. The cost of the kit can be recovered within a year if productive use of the treated wastewater and cost savings in cesspit evacuation are taken into account.

Terafil water filters: clay filters promise clean drinking water in villages in Jharkand, India

Two villages in East Singhbhum district, Jharkand state, India, are to host a pilot project to promote the use of Terafil filters. Terafil filters consist of porous terracotta discs produced from a mixture of red clay, river sand and wood saw dust, without using chemicals.
