Two hepatitis A outbreaks in the regions of Sofia and Plovdiv have contributed to a 45 per cent increase in the incidence of viral hepatitis in Bulgaria. The Plovdiv outbreak occured in areas where people belonging to the Roma ethnic minority live and was linked to poor sanitation and hygiene conditions.

Russia, Chechnya: Polish NGO hands over treatment plant, constructs school toilets

As part of its water and sanitation programmes, the Polish Humanitarian Organisation (PHO) is handing over water treatment plants to the local water and sewerage company of Grozny, and building toilets for schools and hospitals. PHO has other ongoing or planned water and sanitation projects in Sri Lanka, Sudan and the West Bank, Palestine.
