3. Cases and Examples of Partnerships
Updated - Tuesday 20 March 2007
This section covers very nearly half of the written text of the TOP. It is divided into five sub-sections, each one offering the background on and practical example of a particular type of partnership: North-South, Public-Private, Tri-Sector or Multi-Sector, Public-Public, Network organizations. The examples refer respectively to:
- (North-South) - IRC and the Resource Centre Network in Nepal. How IRC partnered and supported Nepal Water for Health (NEWAH) for the development of a resource centre network aimed at creating an environment for synergies and information sharing between different organizations.
- (Public-Private) – Workings and outcomes of the 30 year concession contract awarded to Aguas Argentinas for the water and sanitation service in Buenos Aires in 1993.
- (Tri-Sector or Multi-Sector) – Partnering of a community organization, an NGO and a public authority (the Nairobi City Council) to extend a piped water service into a village community within a large informal settlement on the outskirts of Nairobi, so cutting the high charges for water supplied by vendors.
- (Public- Public) – Partnering of the low income base Harrismith Local Municipality with Rand Water, South Africa, the latter providing technical and management expertise to revitalise a failing water and sanitation service, with assets and capital improvements remaining the responsibility of the local authority.
- (Network Organizations) – The examples given here are of network organizations at the international, regional and national level. At these respective levels the text outlines the approaches of the Global Water Partnership, WaterNet (38 university departments and research institutes in 13 countries of Southern and Eastern Africa), and the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP).
