United Nations: 2008 declared International Year of Sanitation
Updated - Wednesday 20 December 2006
The U.N. General Assembly has declared 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation. It requested the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs [2] to serve as the focal point for the Year and to develop proposals on possible activities, including possible sources of funding. The Year was one of the recommendations of the Hashimoto Action Plan [3] launched by the U.N. Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation in March 2006 at the 4th World Water Forum.
