6. MSF and the MDGs
Updated - Wednesday 08 November 2006
Access to safe water and adequate sanitation are essential for improving public health, reducing poverty and enabling economic development, particularly in countries where a large part of the population is affected by water related diseases. Water borne diseases are ranked among the three main causes of mortality and morbidity in the world. Improving household and neighbourhood connections to water supply is a priority.
MSF technology has significant advantages as it does not use chemicals, equipment or imported materials. It can be easily administrated, maintained and operated by local community organisations. Figures from Colombia suggest that construction costs are less than US $50 per person, operation and maintenance costs are as low as 1.3 to 4.1 US cents per person per week.
