Since the inception of the project in December 2005, meetings and workshops have been held with local authorities, small industries, clinics and farmers in Rajshahi City and Kurunegala, two poor urban areas in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively. In order to develop and test solutions for sanitation and wastewater management and to reduce the risks from wastewater use in agriculture, a wide range of data has been collected. These include community surveys on wastewater use in these areas, an institutional analysis, water quality and sanitation assessments.
The WASPA approach involves the development of stakeholder coalitions at town and national level, called Learning Alliances, which will bring together the main stakeholders into a participatory process through participatory action plans which have been developed. In 2007, Learning Alliance meetings brought together the stakeholders to develop these plans and to learn from the asessments.
The project is being undertaken by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Sri Lanka; COSI, Sri Lanka; the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC), the Netherlands; NGO Forum for Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation, Bangladesh; and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Sweden. It is funded primarily under EU Asia Pro-Eco II.
