'Smart Sanitation Solutions' publication launched in Mexico

Updated - Tuesday 21 March 2006

The NGO platform of the Netherlands Water Partnership, together with local partners, presented the new publication ‘Smart Sanitation Solutions’ to HRH the Prince of Orange during the 4th World Water Forum in Mexico. This is one of the Dutch contributions to reach the Millennium Development Goal 10.

This new publication of the NWP, WASTE, IRC, Practica and Simavi describes household and community- based sanitation solutions that have proven to be effective and affordable. As such it is a source of inspiration. Funding comes from Partners for Water, a programme that aims to strengthen the international position of the Dutch water sector.

Sanitation, along with clean water and food security, is a primary driver for improving public health. Smart Sanitation Solutions gives examples of low-cost household and community-based sanitation solutions that have proven effective and affordable. It illustrates a range of innovative technologies for toilets, collection, transportation, treatment and use of sanitation products that have already helped thousands of poor families to improve their lives.

The NWP-NGO platform also launched the third edition of ‘Smart Water Solutions’ in Mexico. Last year, the first edition won “the best NGO publication of 2004” award in India. It is now available in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. These booklets can bring ‘water and sanitation for all’ closer to reality.
