John Butterworth
Senior Programme Officer, Global Team
John is the Country Director of IRC's Ethiopia Country Programme and he also co-coordinates IRC's Innovation Programme which involves encouraging the development of new IRC themes and activities. He has specific expertise in alternative approaches to rural water supply (self supply, multiple use water services), transparency and accountability (currently supporting development of a WASH sector anti-corruption strategy for the Government of Mozambique), multi-stakeholder approaches to learning and change, and water resources management. He has 15 years practical experience in Latin America, Africa and Asia. He previously worked in the UK with the Natural Resources Institute's (NRI) Livelihoods & Institutions group, in the engineering team at consultants Scott Wilson, was an associate professional officer for the UK Department for International Development (DFID), and a PhD researcher (on catchment management in southern Zimbabwe) at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. His academic background is in geography and hydrology. and he has country experience in Bolivia, Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Mozambique Zimbabwe, and the UK. He has served as the coordinator of the Multiple Use Water Services thematic group, on the International Steering Committee of the Water Integrity Network and is a member of the Rural Water Supply Network working group on self supply. John lives in Poland with his young family.
