Ecosan: India's first eco-sanitary mart opens in Kerala
Updated - Friday 16 December 2005
Eco-solutions opened India's first Ecological Sanitaryware Mart in Trivandrum District, Kerala on 28 November 2005. The mart aims to be a focal point for ecological sanitation (ecosan) work in the area, offering advice and construction services to the community and selling the ecopan, a urine-diverting toilet pan.
Eco-solutions, an initiative of Paul Calvert, introduced urine-diverting toilets in India in 1994. The Eco-solutions website states that Unicef has endorsed the ecosan approach and encouraged the Madhya Pradesh government to visit ecosan projects in Kerala. A delegation from Madhya Pradesh was present at the inauguration of the eco-sanitary mart.
Eco-solutions made the ecopan in small numbers in earlier years for its own projects and development work. The workshop was hit by the tsunami and moulds and pans were damaged. But now a new unit has been established by girls from tsunami-hit areas. The ecopan is being sold in India for INR 450 (EUR 8.25) excluding postage and packaging.
