a fresh start

jan teun visscher - Thursday 24 November 2005

Dear colleagues

As you can see the E-conference is now starting up. We had severe problems with our server which caused that you were not able to place your contribution on the conference site. This has now been remedied by the IRC colleagues.

Of course we will make up for the time that we experienced the problems so the proposal is to run the conference for another two weeks untill december 7. I trust that this will be feasible for you and I hope for some nice and challenging contributions in addition to the once already posted.

The proposed topic for the discussion is how to convince managers (and other leaders) to give KM higher priority.

Regards

Jan Teun Visscher

Re: a fresh start - KM in terms of joint learning requires user friendly platforms

Peter - Wednesday 07 December 2005

I have experimented over the past years with many forms of digital / virtual platforms (there are many different terms used for this relatively new form of joint learning).

I consider this virtual joint learning an important form of Knowledge Management. It is in my view essential that willing participants in such joint learning events are offered user friendly instruments / platforms and excellent facilitation.

I feel that the platform used for this e-conference has a series of worrying limitations and is not very user-friendly. This also leads, wrongly maybe, to the impression that the facilitation is not optimal.

I would like to hear from participants, how they look at this. As I am involved in facilitating a number of joint learning platforms of IRC's major Resource Centre Development Program, I am in search of more user-friendly ways of virtual joint learning (of course in combination with more traditional physical meetings based learning). As so I'm very interested to hear about your experiences with virtual joint learning AND in your experience in convincing your bosses in providing you with adequate and user-friendly instruments.

This is a challenge which I will have to take up with our management team.

PS. Sorry for joining in late, I never got Jan-Teun's message about 'a new start'. I see the deadline is tonight, 7 December. Too bad so few people managed to join in again. I wonder why!

Greetings
Peter
